Friday Favorites: Taste of Austin

This past Wednesday was the annual Taste of Austin event. For those not in the know, it’s a big foodie event that showcases Austin-area restaurants and caterers. You buy a ticket to get in the door, and then you wander around the many different booths, getting samples of different signature foods from each place. It’s a great way to discover new places to eat out. I went last year with a group of friends and had so much fun. The sample sizes are fairly small, true, but you get so many of them throughout the night that you easily leave full. Many places also hand out coupons with their samples, so you can try out their place in person. And there’s everything from coffee and wine to sushi and steak to tacos and finger food. This year the boy was able to go with me, so we got to do something a little different and fun for date night. 🙂 If your city does a similar thing, definitely check it out! Yummy and fun.

I kept track of which booths we visited on the little program guide they give you, and snapped pics of the different delectable dishes. I didn’t take my new fancy camera, since it would’ve been hard to juggle it plus all the different foodstuffs. So these are all taken with my iPhone. See below! Also a little mini What I Wore included, in which Ian makes a guest appearance. 😉

A view of some of the booths set up at the North Austin Event Center

Lamb chop with a mint pesto sauce, from Fleming's. This was Ian's favorite.

Vegetarian goodies from Satay.

Finger food from Spec's.

A bunch of things from Taste of Ethiopia. Ian was not impressed they used canned green beans in one dish.

Breaded chicken with mushrooms and olives and tomatoes, from Carmelos

Taco from Tacos N Tequila, crab fried rice from Mai Thai.

FOUR types of cake, from the Simon Lee Bakery. This was my favorite of the night. 🙂

Raspberry cupcake from Gigi's Cupcakes. This was a close second as my favorite booth.
