June Book Club Review & Link-up: Soulless

Soulless

(Parasol Protectorate #1)
by Gail Carriger

SoullessThis was the June Blogger Book Club pick, in the Paranormal genre. And personally, I thought it was a treat – just a delightfully fun read. Soulless has the witty flavor of Jane Austen mixed with steampunk, mystery, vampires and werewolves, and a good ol’ rollicking romance. Alexia Tarabotti is an entertaining protagonist, with a penchant for meddling, parasols and good food. The story is told in 3rd person, so it misses a little of the intimacy of having her as the 1st person narrator, but I found her to be relatable and sympathetic nonetheless. The inevitable romance plot line is a bit predictable, but then I don’t think the book was aiming at subtlety in this matter. The mystery/crime plot line is less predictable without being completely out there, which is always a plus for me. The supporting cast of characters is good fun, too, from Ivy with her clueless nature and ridiculous hats to Lord Akeldama’s purposefully outrageous manner of speech. Overall, this is pure entertainment in novel form. It’s not the book to pick up if you’re looking for a high-minded literary read, but if you’re looking for escapism and laughs it fits the bill.

I give it 4/5 stars.

What I Wore: Bleach Painted

This is what I wore yesterday. Well, at least for part of the day. I changed into jeans in the afternoon for a chiropractic appointment (because shorter skirts + adjustment table/traction table don’t mix well) and never got around to getting back into to the skirt. I blame a hectic day, because I really do love this skirt. It’s got pockets! And is super soft and drape-y, and billows when you spin. A+ all around. Also, I’ve been playing with bleach painting again. You many have seen this shirt on Instagram awhile back if you follow me on there. I’ve […]

Kitschy Gift Swap

Kitschy gift swap

A few weeks ago, Caitlin had the brilliant idea to host a gift swap. But not just any gift swap: a gift swap centered around the cheap, touristy, kitschy stuff from around where you live. Seeing as Austin in particular and Texas in general is chock full of that kind of thing, this seemed like a breeze on my end. Plus I’d get paired with someone from some other part of the country, and get a bunch of random, possibly fascinating slices of localized culture in return. Needless to say, I signed up. I was paired up with Ashley, who […]

Friday Favorites: Front Porch Frozen Desserts

Front Porch Frozen Desserts

I’m not sure if you know this, readers, but I have a pretty serious sweet tooth. Like, ice cream is an acceptable meal and I have a candy dish in the living room and a chocolate stash at my desk and pretty much nothing is better than a good piece of pie or cake or brownie. I love Tiff’s Treats and Lick and many other dessert-centric places. I’m still mourning the loss of The Cookie Lounge, to be honest (a build-your-own cookie bar, and then you got it fresh from the oven and still warm and gooey. SO SAD when […]

What I Wore: Shabby Apple {Giveaway}

Here’s a color that will wake you up in the morning! This might be the brightest thing I own. In a good way. The fact that is also super soft, and a flattering wrap dress, just seals the deal. Love it. It’s been trotted out for a few date nights and various slightly-fancy shindigs. I wore it yesterday just because, somehow managing to snag pictures between rain showers. So if it looks more damp than usual in my backyard, that’s why. A point I want to discuss: why is it so hard to find a good, actual wrap dress these […]
