Tuesday Treasure Trove

Tuesday Treasure Trove: this week's round-up of read-worthy links.

Things of Note:

Our oven went kaput last week, and after attempts to fix it by both myself and the boy, it was decided it’s time had come. So we went range shopping over the weekend and picked a new one out. It comes tomorrow! Am I completely domesticated if I’m overly excited about this? It’s got self-cleaning and convection baking and a cooking timer and a middle griddle burner on top (yeah, our old one was old). It’s already been decided that date night tomorrow night will consist of remaining home and using the oven.

In other news, I finished painting the dragonfly screen this weekend. There was an iffy moment where a paper towel got stuck to the still-drying paint and I thought I’d have to start over. But a little bit of sanding once it was dry fixed the issue. I’ll be printing some with it today.

Out New York trip is coming up in 3 short weeks. I’m trying to wrap my head around what to pack. It’s going to be a bit of a climate shock going from Austin to upstate New York. I’m thinking of doing a 7×7 remix challenge to limit the number of things I have to pack. Thoughts/advice? Also, it should be gorgeous up there with all the trees changing color. I will try to take lots of pics, promise.

What have you been up to? How are things in your life lately?

Technically there’s still another week before true autumn starts, though here in Texas we’ll have at least another month or so of summer weather. That doesn’t mean I can’t start thinking about fall, right? Right. Accordingly, this month’s Etsy round-up features some autumn-themed and autumn-colored items that caught my fancy. A Self Portrait in Sound

This month, I will be (sporadically) participating in Blogtember with Jenni. The prompt for today was a self portrait. This is a poem I wrote back in 2005, and recently reworked/updated. I hope you enjoy. A Self Portrait in Sound I am a symphony, a harmonic cacophony – the sound of laughter of pages rustling, turning of a camera shutter and typing keys the sound of a pen whirring over the lines and ink scraped across a screen a piano tinkling coffee dripping the sound of a tear slipping down a cheek of the muscles stretching into a smile the […]

Book vs. Movie: Cloud Atlas

Book vs. Movie: Cloud Atlas

I read half the book, then watched the movie, then read the other half of the book, so everything was still fresh for comparison. And this is one of the few times where I can’t make a clear decision between the book and the movie as to which I liked better. I liked them both, for different reasons. Book Movie Pros Really excellent writing and exploration of different narrative methods (1st person, 3rd person, letters, journals, interview, etc.). Distinct and interesting narrative voices, particularly for the sections in 1st person – gave real life to the characters. Much more detail […]

Tuesday Treasure Trove

Tuesday Treasure Trove: this week's round-up of read-worthy links.

Powerful photo series of the week: India’s “Abused Goddesses” Campaign Against Domestic Violence Fun photo series of the week: This Unique Engagement Photo Shoot is To Die For. Two awesome cartoons: Why Feminism Matters, and If Other Professions Were Paid Like Artists. A science mystery: WTF Is This Weird Web-Tower Thing? We Asked Around. No One Knows. Don’t Ask What I’m Writing. Yup, this every time. Why Etsy’s brave new economy is crumbling. Not sure I’d agree that it’s crumbling, but resellers and copycats are a problem. Former President Jimmy Carter thinks our democracy is in trouble. I agree. Dani’s […]

More Proof I’m An Introvert

What I Think vs. What I Say

This month, I will be (sporadically) participating in Blogtember with Jenni. The prompt for today was to take this personality test, and respond to the results. Every other time I’ve taken a personality test based on Myers-Briggs types, I’ve come up INFJ. But with this one I came up IFTJ. I don’t know if the questions were significantly different, or what. There were certainly a few I couldn’ve gone either way on. But if nothing else, I am for sure Introverted, Intuitive, and Judging. I just waver between Feeling and Thinking, which sounds about right. Here are some snippets about […]

Book Review: The Humans

The Humans

The Humans by Matt Haig Goodreads has a pretty perfect summary of the story, so I’m just going to jump right into my thoughts/reaction. I liked it. It was funny in an absurd way, just the right amount of heart-breaking, and not at all boring. I personally get a kick out of aliens-viewing-humantiy-for-the-first-time narrations, because I think outsiders to our planet would find most of how we live distressing and nonsensical. If you’ve never really thought about it, it can be quite an eye opener. This is another one of those, but with touches of humor that make you literally […]
