The Canyon & the Ring

This Christmas, we went to visit the boy’s family in Arizona, and got to do a little side trip to see the Grand Canyon at the same time. It was my first time seeing it, and the experience did not disappoint!

It was just Ian and me for the side trip. The canyon is about a 4 hour drive from where his parents live. The first afternoon we got there was around 50 degrees, nice and sunny but super windy. We walked around and took in the views before the light died completely.

It turns out there’s not a lot to do in that area at night. We ate dinner at one of the lodges, and then holed up in our hotel room with HGTV for the rest of the evening.

The next day we went out to a different part of the canyon trail in the morning. It was around 25 degrees, so we were super bundled up.

And that morning was when I got a surprise. If you follow me on social media, you already know about this. But Ian proposed to me at the Grand Canyon and we are now engaged!!!

the ring

The beautiful ring Ian designed for me.

We got to a spot where there were no other people, and I was snapping pictures. I was ready to move on, but Ian told me to take one more picture. So I did and right after I snapped the shot, a ring box appeared in the camera viewfinder. Long story short, he asked me to marry him, I said yes, and there was a bit of crying and happy laughter (on my part). It was on Tuesday, December 23rd, and I’ve pretty much been on cloud nine since then. We’ve been dating for almost 5 ½ years, but this was still a complete surprise. And how gorgeous is that ring?! He had it custom designed, working with the jewelry store to come up with it (with my subtle hint of a ring Pinterest board I sent him literally years ago as inspiration). Apparently some of those weekends when he ‘had to go into work’ he was actually at the jewelry store. Sneaky! But he did an amazing job. I love my ring. It’s just a tad big, so we will have to get it resized (sadness! I’ll be without it for a week or two).

So it look like my 2015 will be busy with wedding planning. 😀 If you want to follow along, my Pinterest wedding planning board is here.

How was your Christmas break? Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon?
