- This story made my day: This book nerd’s tweet to a bookstore’s official Twitter account ended in a love story.
- Bizarre article of the week: What to Eat for Breakfast if You Want to Live Forever.
- How to Avoid the Most Common Fake Foods on Restaurant Menus. I do not think that food is what you think it is.
- A Guaranteed Income for Every American. “Replacing the welfare state with an annual grant is the best way to cope with a radically changing U.S. jobs market—and to revitalize America’s civic culture.”
- Why the Clinton America sees isn’t the Clinton colleagues know. “You do not need to assert any grand patriarchal conspiracy to suggest that a process developed by men, dominated by men, and, until relatively late in American life, limited to men might subtly favor traits that are particularly prevalent in men. Talking over listening, perhaps. […] One way of reading the Democratic primary is that it pitted an unusually pure male leadership style against an unusually pure female leadership style. Sanders is a great talker and a poor relationship builder. Clinton is a great relationship builder and a poor talker. In this case — the first time at the presidential level — the female leadership style won.”
- The Untold Story of Magic Leap, the World’s Most Secretive Virtual Reality Startup.
- How technology disrupted the truth. “It seemed that journalists were no longer required to believe their own stories to be true, nor, apparently, did they need to provide evidence. Instead it was up to the reader – who does not even know the identity of the source – to make up their own mind. But based on what? Gut instinct, intuition, mood? Does the truth matter any more?”
- In the Age of ISIS, Who’s a Terrorist, and Who’s Simply Deranged? “Instances of wanton violence have been swiftly judged to be the work of terrorists, even when there is little evidence of direct ties to terrorist groups.”
Things of Note:
How’s that for a reading line-up?
We hosted my in-laws this past weekend, as it was Samsung Family Day- a rare opportunity for outsiders to get a tour of the secret secret Austin facilities and maybe finally understand what their loved one does for a living. I had attended the first one a few years ago, but Ian’s mom had never been. So we went. It was good fun, as was all of the food-making (this), eating out and movie-watching we did with them on their short visit.
One of our ventures was out to Lick Honest Ice Creams for National Ice Cream Day. I tried the Dewberry Corn Cobbler flavor (interesting but strange), the Vegan Vanilla Berry (not as good as hoped), and the Caramel Salt Like (AMAZING! Get this). I was also tempted to try the Loquat Margarita, but one can only eat so much ice cream during one outing.
What did you get up to this past weekend?
