Design Files

I’m a graphic designer by day, and this is where I talk about all things design. Portfolio spotlights, design lingo FYIs, color theory, and eventually tutorials and downloads. If you’re in need of a designer for your blog or small business, please check out my Design Services.

10 Lessons Learned from Freelancing

10 Lessons Learned from Freelancing

I have been 100% self-employed for almost 8 years now. Freelancing as a graphic designer has been (and still is) my full-time job and main source of income. As any self-employed person can tell you, it’s a bit of a bumpy road. Especially if, like me, you never planned on freelancing and kind of fell into it. Not my recommended course of action, by the way. 🙂 If you’re considering doing freelance work, do some research and make a plan before wading in. In that light, here are 10 things I’ve learned over the course of my freelance career that […]

Decoding Design: Color Lingo

CMYK vs. RGB vs. PMS

If you’ve ever had an in-depth conversation with a designer, you’ve probably been bombarded by letter combinations like CMYK, RGB, DPI, and odd terms like bleeds and spot colors. We designers throw these terms around all the time, maybe without realizing that not everyone lives and breathes these things like we do. Design Files: The Stylish Disaster

The Stylish Disaster

Recently, my good bloggy friend Liz (hi Liz!) decided to do a complete rebrand of her blog. Previously blogging as ‘Dressing to the Nines in the Lonestar State’, she decided ‘The Stylish Disaster‘ was more fitting for her snarky lifestyle content (and also less of a mouthful). And she needed a new look to go with it. She wanted something clean and uncluttered, but still interesting. Luckily, she’s friends with a graphic designer who was only too happy to take her on as a client – me! See the transformation below: Here’s a closer look at some of the new […]

New Look

New Design

I’ve been a bit quiet on the blogging front this week, but I have a good reason: I’ve been working on giving Dragonflight Dreams a makeover! If you’re following through a reader, click through to see the fresh new look. I kept a few elements from the old look (the textured paper at the top, the blue accent color, the swirls in the header), but I added some width and spacing for a more open feel. Overall, this will allow for wider images and a less cluttered appearance. And I also added in some purple and polka dots, because I […]

Come Say Hi at TxSC!

This weekend I’ll be attending (and volunteering at!) the Texas Style Council conference. I’m pretty excited about it, and just a smidge nervous because, hello, introvert. But I went last year, so I know more what to expect, and know some girls attending, so it’s already that much less nerve-wracking. That being said, part of the reason behind going to a conference is to network and meet people, so please come say hi! I’ve been told by some now-close friends that I come off as a bit aloof upon first meeting, but that’s just my introverted-ness and suckiness at […]
