Recipe: Homemade Chex Mix

Yes, that’s right – homemade Chex Mix! All the tastiness of the store-bought stuff, but tailored to the bits you like. For example, none of those mini breadsticks or toasted bagel slices or rye chips. Unless of course you want them. I don’t, particularly. If I had my way, Chex Mix would come out with a version that was only the cereal, none of the other stuff. So when my mom passed along her recipe for homemade Chex Mix, I jumped at the chance to customize it just the way I like it. I considered doing an all-cereal version (and still may, someday), but kept the pretzels and nuts to appease the boyfriend. The core of this recipe is really the seasoning mix; for the rest, you can play with amounts and ingredients as you like.

Dish of yumminess. There are 3 more dishes like this - recipe makes a lot. 🙂

Homemade Chex Mix

What You’ll Need

  • Oven/Stove
  • 1 roasting pan/dry roaster
  • 1 sauce pot
  • 1 big spoon
  • 1 box rice Chex
  • 1 box wheat Chex
  • 1 box corn Chex
  • pretzels, small to medium bag (I like the sticks, but any shape is fine)
  • nuts, regular canister (I used cashews, but peanuts or mixed nuts also work)
  • 1 lb. butter (2 cups)
  • 1 Tbsp. onion salt
  • 1 Tbsp. celery salt
  • 1 Tbsp. garlic salt
  • 3-4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

The Ingredients
The Magic Ingredients

It should be noted that you probably only need the smaller boxes of the Chex varieties (like the wheat one pictured here), not the large boxes like the two in the back here. I had WAY more Chex than would all fit in my roasting pan. You can also substitute plain mini shredded what for one of the Chex flavors if you prefer. I also had pretzels left over with a bag of the size pictured, but I went light on the pretzels. Again, you can play with proportions of ingredients to suit your tastes.

How to Make It

  1. Combine cereals, pretzels, and nuts in your roasting pan. Mix it up well.
  2. Melt the butter in the saucepan on the stove. Once melted, add in salts and sauce. Mix well,
  3. Pour the seasoning mix over the dry goods in the roaster. Stir it up well so everything gets coated.
  4. Bake in the oven at 250F for 2 to 2.5 hours, stirring every half hour.
  5. Enjoy a whole lot of nom.
The dry ingredients before the seasoning is added.

Book Review: Scar Night

Scar Night (Deepgate Codex #1) By Alan Campbell I wasn’t too impressed with this one. I had high hopes, from the jacket text, but ultimately it was just too disjointed for me. I’m not even sure how to sum it up. There’s questions of mortality, the soul, angels, religion, warfare, etc… but it’s all kind of jumbled, and set in a really dark world, where even the inhabitants of the place view life as pointless. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with a dark setting in and of itself; but if the setting’s going to be that dark, then […]

Friday Favorites: Belts

I have fairly long legs compared to the size of my waist, so finding jeans or pants that fit right can be a bit of a problem. Generally, if they fit through the thigh and legs and are long enough, they are too big in the waist. What this means is that I end up wearing a lot of belts. I wear a belt almost every day. Pretty much the only time I don’t wear a belt is when I’m in pajamas or exercise clothes (yay elastic waists!). Since this is such a permanent fixture in my wardrobe, you can […]

D.I.Y. Simple Home Humidifier

Ever wake up on a winter morning with a sore throat, even though you’re perfectly healthy? Well, don’t fret – you’re likely not sick, just parched. The cold winter weather tends to dry out the air in a lot of homes, mine included. It also dries out my hands, but that’s another story. Anyway, if you don’t want to shell out some of your hard-earned bucks for a fancy humidifier machine, here’s a simple way to get the same humidifying effect using just a few things from your kitchen. I learned this from my mom, who used to do this […]
