Friday Favorites: Goody Spin Pins

A bit of a preface on this one: I have really fine hair. I don’t mean really pretty (though it’s not to bad on that score); I mean really thin. So volume is not really a thing that exists naturally for me, and doesn’t last long when artificially induced with foam or spray or whatnot. Bobby pins just fall back out almost immediately. This hair situation is compounded by the fact that I am also terrible with hair in general. I can’t utilize a curling iron to save my life, or braid my own hair (though I can do others). So that means, most days, I’m wearing my hair up in some way. A simple ponytail holder, or a clip, was the norm. Not the most sophisticated look. But that was all I knew how to do.

Until I was enlightened about the awesomeness that is Goody Spin Pins.

Have you guys heard of these things?! I hadn’t, until a few months ago I happened to catch a Twitter exchange between two ladies I follow. One had been asking advice for an easy yet sophisticated way to do an updo for thin hair, and the other pointed her towards Goody Spin Pins. Curious, I checked them out and ordered a set in Brunette (they come in Blonde or Brunette). They arrived, I read the very simple instructions, and tried it out. AND I’M NEVER GOING BACK. These things are amazing! They are so easy to use, they stay put all day, and it looks good. Win all around.

You simply twist your hair into a bun at the nape of your neck. The twist one pin in from the top, and one pin in from the bottom, without interlocking them.

And voila! You’re done. No hairspray needed, no extra bobby pins. It takes maybe 30 seconds, and it stays put all day.

I’ve been sticking with the simple messy bun look, but there are loads of ways you can use these. Some require a bit longer hair and defter hair-wrangling skills than I have. Leezal over at The Mane Idea has some great tutorials for 8 different looks you can do with these pins.

What I Wore #1: Autumn Inspired

What I Wore #1: Autumn-Inspired puppy

I’ve been blog-stalking a bunch of stylish and craftsy ladies, and several of them do a What I Wore type post occasionally. These posts are always fun to look through, because it gives insight into a person’s style and personality, and also I just like seeing the creative combinations people come up with. SO! I’m going to start a What I Wore series, as well (imitation is the highest form of flattery, yes?). And this here is the first one. It’s officially autumn now, even though we are still having 100-degree days here in Austin. Twitter and crafty blogs abound […]

Friday Favorites: Leaf Necklace

I am starting a new series here on the blog. Every Friday I’m going to highlight an item that I’m absolutely in love with. It could be anything from a piece of jewelry to shoes to a book to a recipe to a website; I may or may not own said item. I’m just trying to share a little bit of my personal style and things that make me happy, in the hopes they make you happy/inspire you, too! So, to kick it off, this week’s Friday Favorite is my copper leaf necklace. I say it’s a leaf, but it […]

New Design: Vines

Long, leafy vines

So here is the next design I’ll be making a screen of and printing up. Long leafy vines. I’m still debating whether to leave the leaves (ha) as outlines, or fill them in. I’m thinking just outlines.

Book Review: Ice Song

Ice Song By Kirsten Imani Kasai I was very intrigued by this book from the blurb on the back, which prompted me to check it out from the library. And then it was nothing like what the back leads you to believe. For a novel whose main character is a gender-bender (literally), she spends awfully little time as her male counterpart. He doesn’t even show up until more than a third of the way into the book. I did think it was a neat twist that her two halves don’t share memories – talk about confusing. But the rest of […]

Book Review: The Ordinary

The Ordinary By Jim Grimsley I picked this book up from the library because it had a very interesting premise: There is one world that is very science-oriented, logical, over-populated and high-tech. There is another world that is flat, plentiful, and where magic is a proven reality. And suddenly there is a gate between the two. Talk about narrative tension! The beautiful dichotomy sets up an intriguing ‘what if’ story, with likeable characters, engaging plot and just enough mystery and suspense to keep you guessing. My only critique is that the ending seemed to wrap up too quickly, and at the […]
