October Shop Charity

NBCF October Shop Charity

In case you missed it at the start of the year, one of the things I’ve decided to do with my shops this year is donate a portion of all sales to charities or causes that I support.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. That combined with the fact that I had a family member who dealt with breast cancer made this month’s shop cause a no brainer. The beneficiary for October is the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Breast cancer is a big problem for women in the United States: 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. There’s not currently a full cure, and so early diagnosis is critical to survival. The NBCF provides free mammograms to women in all 50 states through their network of hospitals, and also advocates for education and support services for those who been diagnosed. If you agree that women’s health is an important issue, you can support the cause by a direct donation on the NBCF site, or by shopping in either of my shops (screen printing or digital) this month.

At the beginning of this month $20 was donated to the September shop charity – thank you!

New Design: Feather

The newest design slated to be added to the Dragonflight Dreams shop repertoire: If I think about a feather as an important mythological element, two things come to mind. The first is Egyptian mythology, where the hearts of the dead were weighed against a feather on the scales of justice to judge their worthiness. If the heart was lighter than the feather, it meant it was free of sin and the person could then enter the afterlife. The other is from Russian folklore. In many tales, the glowing feather of a firebird is what sparks an epic quest, because a […]

September Shop Charity

In case you missed it at the start of the year, one of the things I’ve decided to do with my shops this year is donate a portion of all sales to charities or causes that I support. September, aside from being the season of pumpkin spice lattes and football, is also the start of the harvest season. Fittingly, the charity I’ve chosen to support this month is all about food: the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. I know that I am priveleged when it comes to food. My income is enough that I can go to the grocery […]

Busy Little Bee

Now that the craft show is past, I’ve been attending to a lot of the other to-do list items for my shop. First up, I’m finally getting photos of the made-to-order shirts on an actual person! Witness: Yeah, that’s just me wearing them. I never know what to do with my arms. I only have photos of the size mediums I had printed so far (note to self: always print a size medium for the example shots for made-to-order shirts), but I’ll get to the rest slowly and surely. Also, I did a big inventory and sorting of all of […]

ACR Summer Show Recap

This past weekend was the Austin Craft Riot Summer Show, otherwise known as the first major craft show that I’ve ever done. Which you probably knew because I basically talked about nothing else here on the blog for the past month. And of course I had high hopes, though I tried to temper those with realistic talk about it being my first show and that any sales are good and it’s getting my name/brand out there locally, etc. etc. And at the end of the weekend, I’d made back my booth fee and a little more – but not that […]

Austin Craft Riot Summer Show

If you’ve been around the blog awhile, you probably already know this as I’ve been talking about it for a few weeks. But this upcoming weekend is the annual Austin Craft Riot Summer Show. It’s got over 70 local handmade artisans and food trucks and kids activities and live music and a bar. And it’s inside in the air conditioning. And, most importantly, it’s my first major craft show and you should come. My booth will be right up front by the lobby – hard to miss! Here are the details: If you are an Austinite or just in town […]

August Shop Charity

UNICEF

In case you missed it at the start of the year, one of the things I’ve decided to do with my shops this year is donate a portion of all sales to charities or causes that I support. August, aside from being back to school time, is also host to World Humanitarian Day and International Youth Day. Fittingly, to support kids around the world, I’ve chosen UNICEF to be this month’s beneficiary. UNICEF, or the United Nations Children’s Fund, was created to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. They are active in […]
