Book Review: Fangirl

Fangirl

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell This is one of my book club’s picks for January. To be honest, initially I wasn’t too excited about it. A story centering around a girl who writes fan fiction? Meh. I’m not huge on fan fiction in general, mostly because so much of it is badly written but also because it strikes me as a bit obsessive. So I was already inclined to not really like the main character. I’m happy to say that, while my view of fan fiction remains unchanged, I did end up really liking this book. The main character, Cath, is […]

What I Wore: Warms with White

I know I just said last week that I was thinking about not doing these anymore. But then it warmed up outside and was sunny, and I had an outfit I liked the colors of and wanted to capture. So here you have it. Not quite done with the style posts just yet. 🙂 These are not the first white pants I’ve owned (ok, they’re the second) but they’re the first ones I’ve actually felt comfortable wearing. The material is sturdy corduroy, so there’s no see-thru factor in the hindquarters region, which you know is sometimes a problem with light-colored […]

Tuesday Treasure Trove

Tuesday Treasure Trove: this week's round-up of read-worthy links.

Dorky hilarity of the week: Some Concerns About Sauron’s Battle Plan. I really want to see Jupiter Ascending. If nothing else, it looks gorgeous. In other movie news, Saving Mr. Banks Is a Corporate, Borderline-Sexist Spoonful of Lies. Not that I wanted to see it anyway, but it’s still disappointing. How Busy Colleagues Spread Secondhand Stress The iPersonic Personality Test. I got Dreamy Idealist, which I didn’t agree with from the title, but did from the description. A really interesting and informative read: How I Found Out I Didn’t Have the Herpes I’d Been Living With for Four Years. (via […]

Book Review: Helen & Troy’s Epic Road Quest

Helen & Troy's Epic Road Quest

Helen & Troy’s Epic Road Quest by A. Lee Martinez Helen & Troy’s Epic Road Quest is a snarky YA romp through the tropes of mythology, in the form of a road trip across part of western America. I’m a big fan of classic mythologies, so this seemed like it’d be right up my alley. It’s imaginative (as far as world setting), absurdist and mildly entertaining. Unfortunately, it’s not much else. While the concept of the story is creative and unique, the execution leaves something to be desired. The characters are flat and predictable, and the humorous absurdity is undercut […]

Bits & Pieces

Bits & Pieces

1. I’m guest posting over at Lena’s place today with simple ways to put good karma out there. Check it out. 2. I’ve thought of about a million other things to use yesterday’s dip recipe with. Carrots. Crackers. Pretzels. On toast. On bagels. On French toast. With strawberries inside a crepe. I could go on. Basically, this is going to become a staple in my house and you should really try it out if you haven’t already. Nom. 3. Still gearing up for this weekend’s craft fair. I’ll be sitting there for 6 hours and the boy has declined to […]
