Sew Exciting

So, along with my new camera (which got here yesterday but I haven’t had a chance to play with much because I had to charge the battery first and was feeling crappy yesterday), I also picked up this beauty this past weekend:

Yup. I can haz sewing machine! You may remember that this bernette 46 machine was on my Crafty Wishlist for Christmas. Well, I decided to just go ahead and get it for myself. Bernette and I are going to be BFFs someday, but first I have to learn how to use her. I’ve never used a sewing machine in my life. I’ve hand-sewn/stitched some things (case in point, that dragonfly ‘backdrop’ is actually a set of curtains I made for my old place, but they don’t fit on any windows in the new place), but literally have not touched a sewing machine before. Luckily the place I bought it from – shout out to Sew Much More! – offers free training on my machine, since I bought it from them – for as long as I own the machine. That’s pretty cool, and I’m pretty excited to get started. I’m waiting to hear back about scheduling for my first session (I just emailed yesterday, but I’m impatient). So stay tuned for the trials and tribulations of Amanda Learns to Sew.

Also, if you have any advice for how to get started/easy projects to ease me into the stitchery world, let me know. I’ve been told pillows are the easiest place to start by a few sources, so I’ll probably go with that, but I only have room for so many additional pillows in the house.

Book Review: Path of Fate

Path of Fate (Path #1) By Diana Pharaoh Francis This one started a bit slow, but was worth the effort. There are some motifs I’ve come across many times before in fantasy: orphan protagonist, companion animals that humans mind-meld with, evil mages, an initially-disliked romantic interest. That said, it was still a fresh read. The protagonist (Reisil) is very sympathetic, and stronger than she thinks. The interactions from her companion animal, a hawk named Saljane, were (somehow) believably bird-like; I’m not sure how that was accomplished, exactly, but I liked it. Reisil’s healing skills and reluctance to follow the path of […]

Friday Favorites: Pinterest

Ladies and gentlemen, my latest addiction: Inspiration boards on color, style or event type. Wishlists that can span as many different sites and shops as you want. Yummy food recipes with delicious pictures. Funny things. Cute things. Pinterest has and is all of this, and more. I’m completely addicted. Also, I’m not sure how, as a designer, I didn’t come upon this sooner. It’s useful, and fun, and full of pretty things – in other words, right up my alley. You can find me on Pinterest here. And if you’re not signed up but want to join, let me know […]

48 Questions

Well, I wanted to do an outfit post today, but it is wet and gloomy and cold out, so instead I’m stealing this 48 Questions thing from Liz’s blog. 🙂 I’m also guest blogging today over at The Streeters Unlimited, with 5 Tips for a More User-Friendly Blog. Check it out. Other News I just ordered a bunch of mini cards for the Texas Style Council Blogger Conference, woohoo! Fun Camera News!

So, this morning I won an auction on Ebay for a Nikon D5000 camera. !!!! I’ve worked with Nikon DSLRs before (most particularly when I was a photography intern at a newspaper way back when) but have never myself owned one. I’ve been getting by with my Nikon Coolpix point-and-shoot, and my iPhone. Upon winning the camera auction, I also promptly ordered a tripod and remote to go with it. A remote, you guys! No more setting the 10-second timer and running to get in place and hoping I don’t look goofy and have to do it all over again. […]

Trends I Love & Dislike

Trends I Love with Abandon Skinny jeans/pants. I never thought I’d jump on the skinny jean bandwagon, but I’m definitely a convert. They do amazing things for my posterior, and are easy to pair with different shoe types. Colorful tights and thigh-highs. I haven’t taken as much advantage of this trend as I should. I have a drawer-ful of possibilities. Ballet flats. LOVE these. Comfy and cute, without needing heels. I have about 6 pairs in different colors. Lace. Show me something lacy, and I’ll probably want to own it. Can’t get enough of this.     Trends I Dislike […]

Friday Favorites: Mmmchiladas

Today’s recipe brought to you by my Mexican-food-loving boyfriend, Ian, who has gotten me addicted to it as well (probably a good thing, since we are in Texas and all). He’s the stud you’ll see assembling things in the pics below. These are simple and delicious. And I call them Mmmchiladas instead of plain enchiladas because they are that yummy. Just a warning, declaring it to be Mmmchilada night may inspire silly dancing and co-opting of show tunes with lyrics replaced by Mmmchiladas and talk of beef and cheese. Or at least that’s been my experience. Ahem. Enjoy! Mmmchiladas (Beef […]
